Summer is unquestionably here thanks to the heat waves that have been sweeping the planet, if there is one benefit to global warming it’s that summer hits harder every year now. Ever this means that the cosy rooms of closeted coffee lovers and the thick air adored by café regulars will now be reaching scorching temperatures. The last thing you are going to want to do is make a hot coffee or even order one. Luckily cafes are one step ahead and have altered their menus accordingly meaning that you can enjoy your caffeine fix in a new way. Why not try some of these cold summery drinks to cool you down during this season.
Iced Horchata Latte
Though Horchata means different things to people of different nations, what you will be getting is a milk-like drink made from grains and often with some vanilla and/or cinnamon. This lightly spicy plant-based drink has been a hit for years in select places but now more cafés are offering this to customers, add a shot of espresso and you have your new favourite coffee.
It’s a term that has become more popular in the last few years thanks to ‘experts’ on youtube explaining the best methods for creating your own home brew version. Lucky for those of us who don’t have the time, fridge space or basic scientific apparatus handy, our local café is here to help once again. Cold brew isn’t just an iced americano, thanks to the way it’s made (See aforementioned fancy online tutorials) the beans don’t give off as much bitterness delivering a delightful flavour.
Another modern addition to the coffee menu is nitro coffee, this stuff is mixed with nitrogen in order to make a black coffee with a super smooth texture. It does seem oddly magical the first time you sip this wonder of chemistry as your tongue senses the silky smoothness of this caffeinated mix. Try this for yourself as the velvety soft waves of coffee will have you coming back for more very quickly.
Mint Choc Chip Frostino
Few foods have the cooling power of mint, which is why mint choc chip is one of the most popular and most satisfyingly chilled ice cream flavours. The folk over at Costa have decided to add this vital ingredient to what they are calling a Frostino, what is a Frostino you ask? Well nobody knows, but rumours are it’s a thick and creamy iced drink topped with plenty of whipped cream and sprinkled with extras. This sounds particularly good when mixed with mint, and you’ll be happy to know that aesthetically it also delivers that pastel green shade to your glass.
Strawberry Donut Frappuccino
On the other side of the road (probably literally if you live in a city) is the Seattle started café beast Starbucks, who also have some chilled offerings this summer. At the top of the indulgent list is this desert-come-beverage the Strawberry Donut Frappuccino. Expect ice, coffee, strawberry jam and donut crumbles whatever they are. Behold the version of a donut you never knew you wanted; keeping your temperature down and your blood-sugar up all summer long.
